I will be honest here. The only gefilte fish debates I ever knew usually revolved around why would you want to eat that in the first place, how long might one survive if he/she fell into a vat of gefilte fish jelly and is it really from the Dead Sea (the acceptable answers are: only with a ton of horseradish, 2 minutes and no, but it should be).
Yet apparently there is an incredible historical debate about just how gefilte fish should be prepared and a line on the map was drawn - which coincided neatly with another previously unknown (by me) line regarding Yiddish dialects.

Meanwhile, all of this is giving me incredible flashbacks to the movie The Carp in the Bathtub (based off of a children's book about making gefilte fish), which I have somehow conflated with Psycho. You know the grandma heading upstairs holding a rolling pin, pulls back the shower curtain, and there in a frightened state is - the carp in the bathtub. Not sure how I got the two combined in my head but hey, thanks Hebrew school!
And of course, it gives me a reason to put this fantastic clip with Chris Tucker...
