As a tour guide of Israel, and one who leads a mean Israel culinary tour at that, I would be a total fraud if I did not know the name Janna Gur. A noted writer and journalist, she has authored two of Israel's most famous cookbooks. Now she has written an article about the thriving and hip culinary scene of Tel Aviv - in the 1920's and 1930's. It's a fascinating look at the history and development of the city through the lens of food (remember the city only began in 1909 and was evacuated during WWI).
I'm already looking for a time machine to go back and eat at the Fenigstein family's restaurant with roasted goose, a salad with a prickly pear dressing and fresh beer.
