As a tour guide of Israel, for some reason this is a question I get a lot... what is Israel's stance on marijuana. Much is known about Israel being the world leader in medical marijuana, but legalization for recreational use has always lagged behind other countries.
Well now that's about to change... Am Yisrael High.
A major government hurdle has been passed on the way to legalizing and decriminalizing the use of recreational marijuana in Israel. This should allow a bill to come to the Knesset (assuming we don't have new elections) before the end of the the year. According to Israel's Justice Minister, the entire legislative process should take about 9 months which means that one should be able to put something green and leafy in your hookah in the sukkah next year.

Apparently the stunt in which tiny bags of cannabis were dropped from the sky over downtown Tel Aviv by a drone in order to promote legalization actually worked! At that time, the police spoke of a dangerous drug inside, but likely the most dangerous thing were the people running into traffic trying to get their hands on the stuff.

Or perhaps what caused this change in thinking was the discovery of cannabis residue on an ancient Judean altar, showing that it was used in ancient Jewish religious rituals - and as such has to be "kosher."
