Israel Gets Its Own Las Vegas - Just Without the Casinos...

Maaleh Adumim and Mishur Adumim are Jewish communities/settlements just east of Jerusalem in the Judean Desert, which are usually best known for being the reason of perhaps the most contested real estate (outside of the Temple Mount) in the Israel-Palestinian conflict (though that's a subject for another time). Now, however, they are trying to be known for something brand-new: a new entertainment capital. That's right, it's glitz and glamour in the desert as Israel's most majestic and luxurious shopping center opened this week, along with it's first true amusement park - though the most amusing thing about it is the dumbfounding name with which it somehow got saddled.

The mall, named Design City or D-City, indeed is evoking another ritzy desert destination - Las Vegas - as it actually has incorporated a replica of the Venice Hotel in its design. Of course there are no casinos here (illegal in Israel) and the Jewish gangsters who founded Vegas are nowhere to be seen either - this was the brainchild of Hanoch Kass, a real-estate investor and developer. For more on the mall (as well as its questionable viability), click here:

You can also see a cool video and incredible photos of it below:

You may actually recognize the mall from Eden Alene's amazing Eurovision video for her entry "Set Me Free," which you can see below. When I saw it, I was wracking my brain for hours to no avail in trying to figure out where in Israel it was filmed - which is how I discovered the construction of the new mall.

The real craziness, however, is the new amusement park that is being built next door and is set to open soon as well. It's about time we got a real one (we have a few smaller things) and this one will be indoor to boot (you know the desert.... it's like, kinda hot). That being said, it will not be famous for any kick-ass rollercoasters or rides such as Escape the Golem, King Solomon's Mines, Hungry, Hungry Hillel, Rabbi Rapids, or even the Malevolent Mohel. Nope it will be famous for one thing and one thing only: being the worst-named amusement park in the world.

That's right.... It's Name is Magic Kass (for it's benefactor Hanoch Kass). Just read it aloud. Magic Kass. Seriously, what were they thinking? Okay maybe they were thinking about Bilaam's talking donkey from the Torah, but come on... Please folks, it's not too late to change the name (but I wouldn't count on it)....

Well, at the least, this amusement park will be ahem... quite amusing.

Either way I can't wait to go check out these new places on the tourism/entertainment scene :)
