For the first time since 1960, when the Annecy International Animated Film Festival began, Israel finally walked home with an award. "Cinema Rex," about a famed 1930s Jerusalem movie house that was jointly owned by a Jew and an Arab in the time of the British Mandate, won the CANAL+ Youth Award. The movie is only 6 minutes long and tells the story of the cinema from the perspective of the various owners' children.
As a tour guide of Israel, it is something I can talk about on my Shabbat walking tours of New Jerusalem, which focuses on the founding of the new city, the first neighborhoods, the European influences, the British Mandate period and the Divided City of 1948-1967 as well as recent developments and future plans. I'm also working on a cinematic tour of Jerusalem where we watch movie clips where famous movie scenes took place - or should have taken place - and am excited to add this in to the mix.
